General Scholarships
At SLCC, 70% of students work while attending classes, making support from scholarships key to their success. Students who receive scholarships are twice as likely to graduate than those without financial assistance. A post-high school education helps each graduate lower their risk of unemployment and improves their income level and economic mobility.
By investing in SLCC students through scholarship support, you are making a difference in their lives and futures as well as improving our community’s workforce.
Finding Purpose in Second Chances
Sometimes, the most challenging events can lead to the greatest opportunities—and for SLCC student Missee Sue Fearneyhough, those opportunities became her purpose.
In 2016, Missee moved from Provo, Utah to Salt Lake County. “Eight years ago, I left my hometown and began my journey of addiction recovery,” said Missee. “At that time, I was facing chronic addiction and incarceration. Through my recovery, I found my purpose in helping others who are also experiencing addiction.”
Missee’s determination to support others ultimately led her to pursue a career as a licensed substance use disorder counselor. “To become a licensed counselor, I first needed an associate’s degree,” said Missee. “So, I went back to school at the age of 38 and was awarded a scholarship. That scholarship gave me a real chance to change my future.”
“Receiving this scholarship made me realize how often challenges can turn into assets,” said Missee. “It gave me a second chance—not just to improve my own life but to help others battling addiction and assist vulnerable individuals to maintain stable housing.”
In the fall of 2024, Missee graduated from SLCC with an associate’s degree in social work and is now continuing her social work education at the University of Utah. After she earns a bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in social work.
“I’m living proof of how scholarships can transform a life,” said Missee. “And I am continuing this gift by helping others.”
